#2 (#1); C.C. Beck cvr/art; origin & 1st app. Captain Marvel; Comic Book Impact rating of 10 (CBI)
For almost a decade, Superman's most fearsome nemesis was the superhero known as Captain Marvel—whose saga began with his first appearance in 1939's Whiz Comics #2, which was also the first issue of Whiz Comics. (The official "#1" was an internal publishing for copyright use.) The colossal popularity and mammoth sales of the Big Red Cheese eclipsed even the Man of Steel's, with Captain Marvel moving as many as five million copies per issue.

DC's lawyers weren't happy with how Whiz Comics' debut copied the cover of Action #1. The idea of Billy Batson becoming Captain Marvel by saying "Shazam!," however, was C.C. Beck and Billy Parker's own immortal spin on the new superhero mythology. DC still gathered an army of lawyers to pummel Fawcett Publications, and eventually drove them out of the funny book business. Whiz Comics #2, however, still remains a top collectible, with Fawcett's family of Marvels remaining a comics cornerstone and serious collectible.

This copy of Whiz Comics #2(#1) earned a 4.0 CGC Universal Grade. Although it has slightly brittle pages, this book enjoys fantastic eye appeal, with an exceptionally sharp cover. From February 1940, this first official issue of Whiz Comics is one of the most highly sought Golden Age keys. This important issue contains the first appearance and origin of Captain Marvel, as well as the premieres of Sivana, Golden Arrow, Dan Dare, Lance O' Casey, Spy Smasher, and Ibis. The iconic C.C. Beck cover is quite exceptional, with sharp reds and yellows, which shine in both the logo and Captain Marvel's costume.

This is not only one of the most desirable Golden Age comics, but it is one of the most coveted comics of all time. Only 58 copies of this book are reported on the CGC Census, making it a very rare find, as well as a historic cultural artifact. A 3.0 sold for $78,000 last year. Captain Marvel’s debut is the kind of book that continually becomes more elusive, expensive, and desirable over time. With the massively successful “Shazam!” movie already released and spin-offs and sequels coming soon, Whiz Comics has never been more exciting.

Overstreet Guide 2021 VG (4.0) value = $62,400.
