Joe Staton pencils/Ian Gibson inks (attributed); 1st version cover; 1988; image size 10" x 15"the original first version of the cover to the premier issue of DC's 1988 crossover event. Crammed with more characters than you can shake a stick at.
Joe Staton explains the origin of this cover and how it ended up being re-drawn.
"Well, this is certainly the original version of the Millennium cover and the published version is a reworked version. It's likely that this one was inked by Ian Gibson and the second I thought at first was inked by Bruce Patterson but on second look, it looks like Dick Giordano had a hand in it. This whole project was a total blur with costumes being redrawn on the fly by the the production department and constant confusion in the editing process, so it's hard to nail it down. But I'm pretty sure that's what happened. When editing decided how much change they wanted, production pointed out how many stats would be necessary and redrawing would take a mess of whiteout, Dick took over and reinked the whole thing in less time. Can't vouch for it, but that's my call.--Joe"

Joe Staton started at Charlton Comics, then worked briefly at Marvel before being bought out by DC. He illustrated such events as the death of Earth-Two Batman and the JSA's origin. Over the course of his career, he's worked on Showcase, Superboy and the Legion of Super-heroes, Metal Men, The Huntress, The New Guardians, Green Lantern, and Green Lantern Corps.
