Origin & 1st app of Iron Man (Tony Stark); Jack Kirby cover; Steve Ditko art; COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 10 (CBI)
Tony Stark makes his first appearance in this classic collectible from 1963, in which the playboy munitions tycoon is wounded and taken captive while helping the U.S. government fight the Vietcong—before escaping by constructing an armored battle suit. (The outfit also slows the approach of some shrapnel inching toward Stark's heart.) Iron Man would go on to launch the start of Marvel Studios in 2008, with Robert Downey Jr.'s popular portrayal keeping fans speculating that the character might return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In recent years, Iron Man has become one of the most popular and recognizable pop culture icons worldwide. The 2008 “Iron Man” film heralded the birth of the MCU, the highest-grossing and most popular film franchise of all time. Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man would go on to lead the cinematic Avengers, and crossover with dozens of other famous heroes on screen, making superstars out of countless Marvel characters. Tony Stark first appeared in Tales of Suspense #39 in March 1963, a Marvel masterwork that would shape the publisher’s output for decades to come. This incredible copy of Tales of Suspense #39 earned a 6.5 CGC Universal Grade and has cream to off-white pages. The classic Kirby/Heck cover showcasing Shellhead’s original silver armor shines here. Although there is some mild discoloration on this cover, the book looks quite impressive for an FN+. This is an all-time classic key, which introduces one of the longest-running and most beloved characters in all comicdom. With major roles in over a dozen films, Iron Man is the defining movie character of the early 21st century, and this is a handsome copy of his very first appearance.

Overstreet Guide 2021 FN+ (6.5) value = $8,956
