In the 1950s, when Marvel Comics was still known as Atlas Comics, the publishing house chased popular media trends to inspire content. Everything from monsters, horror, westerns, and romance served as fodder for the company's creative team. By decade's end, Stan Lee and his brother Larry Lieber refined the storytelling style that was soon to evolve into the Marvel Comics that we recognize today as giants in the field, aided by such blossoming artistic talents as Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and Dick Ayers. The then rudderless imprint finally began to find its true voice.

Tales to Astonish is one title that first hinted at the great things to come. The comic served as a launching pad and sometimes a safe haven for many of Marvel's big-name heroes, Ant-Man, The Wasp, Hulk, and Sub-Mariner all found a home in Tales to Astonish.
