A 15% BUYER'S PREMIUM WILL BE ADDED TO THIS ITEM AT CONCLUSION OF THE AUCTION ow/white pages; 2nd Highest! QES Certified: impressive prime focal area, beautiful spine, deep color strike (red, green & white) Matt Baker cvr/artSeven Seas showcases early work of Matt Baker, one of the first Black comic book artists to achieve mainstream success, working for the Iger and Eisner shop in the mid 1940’s. Initially, the title carried daring tales of men at sea and marine legends.
Beginning with this issue, managing editor and writer Ruth Roche put Baker’s back-up feature, South Sea Girl, on the cover and gave her the lead story in the book, fighting hostile natives, greedy treasure hunters, sea monsters, and any challengers to her throne. Roche surmised having an alluring and scantily clad young woman on the cover would send sales rocketing, and boy howdy was she was right! She and Baker would go on to collaborate famously on his greatest feature, the blue-chip Phantom Lady.
