classic Biro hanging/hatchet cover (5/44)
Highest GradedLev Gleason Publishing changed the title of Silver Streak Comics to Crime Does Not Pay, and stumbled onto a goldmine. Despite years of pulps and detective magazines, nobody had hit upon the idea to bring lurid tales of real-life murder and mayhem into the pages of the four-color funny books. Collectors prize issue #33 for its particularly horrific Charles Biro cover, which looks like an early inspiration for EC’s legendary horror output. The interior pages include work by Golden Age legends Rudy Palais and Dick Briefer.
Artists Information
The artist behind the original Daredevil at Lev Gleason Publications, Biro got his start working on Crime anthologies for the company. Also known for his work on Airboy and Steel Sterling. One of the standout artists of the Golden Age.
Richard "Dick" Briefer (January 9, 1915 – December 1980) was an American comic-book artist best known for his various adaptations, including humorous ones, of the Frankenstein monster.
