Alex Schomburg cover; Red Skull 1st cover app, Stan Lee 1st published at Marvel (Timely)
Second City Collection
Published in May 1941, this third appearance of the popular Marvel character, Captain America, is of particular significance because it contains the very first published work by Stan Lee. "Stan the Man" made his foray into the comics world by scripting a text story here entitled "Captain America Foils the Traitor's Revenge." In addition to the first cover appearance of Cap's arch villain the Red Skull, the story unfolds with a twist, including the first time Captain America uses his signature "shield-toss," in which he employs his shield as a weapon, rather than just as a defensive object.
This VF- copy is quite handsome, the striking yellow color scheme really pushes the action to the fore, and any condition issues are relegated to the edges. As we've mentioned before, Captain America Comics are hard to come by in good condition, as many wartime books were not viewed as items to be cherished, instead they were passed around by G.I.s overseas, or left to rot in treehouses in suburban backyards, which makes this book a very desirable collectible.

From the estate of a private collector.

Overstreet Guide 2017 VF- (7.5) value = $15,300.

Artists Information

Jack Kirby is called 'The King of Comics' for a reason, during his career that spanned six decades he gave us many of the most iconic characters the medium would ever see. From his introduction of Captain America at the height of World War II it was clear he wasn't your ordinary comics artist. But it was his creative explosion at Marvel Comics in the 1960's that cemented his legacy, over a short period of time Kirby would give us The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, The Hulk, The X-Men, Thor, Ant-Man and Nick Fury just to name a few. Kirby would then go to DC and create his Fourth World, introducing Darkseid, Mister Miracle, The New Gods and a host of cosmic supporting players. Long live The King.

Joseph Henry Simon was an American comic book writer, artist, editor, and publisher. Simon created or co-created many important characters in the 1930sā€“1940s Golden Age of Comic Books, such as Captain America, and served as the first editor of Timely Comics, the company that would evolve into Marvel Comics.
