Bob Montana cvr/art; 1st app. Mrs. Andrews (Winter 1942) COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 8 (CBI)
Archie Comics #1 is a vital part of pop culture, launching eight decades of Archie Andrews’ solo book. The comic is also notable as a notoriously scarce title despite debuting with an enormous print run. Top-tier Archie collectors know this classic debut is considered one of the "black holes" of the collecting community, with an
Archie #1 seldom seen again once it's brought into a collection. This might even be the single most difficult major Golden Age key to obtain after
Pep Comics #22 (where Archie and his pals made their first appearances). This book never fails to elicit excitement when copies surface at auction.
_________________________________________________
Archie Andrews has proven to have a staying power in the comic world that would seem unexpected due to the simple subject matter of a teenager hanging out with his pals and getting into comical situations. But here we are, nearly 80 years later, and Archie is the star of a hit TV series, while his comics sales are still going strong. There must be something to this formula that appeals to the American experience, and Archie collectors are tuned in to the frequency. Archie Comics #1 is an important book in the history of the medium and always sells for impressive numbers. This copy is going to be a popular commodity amongst serious Archie fans who have been priced out of acquiring this comic in higher grades. The copy appears in better condition than its designated grade, and, although it is missing the center wrap, with less than 70 copies on the census, it is still poised to be a popular lot at auction.
