Alright, let's get this out of the way right up front: yes, this robot does look suspiciously like a certain hard-drinking bot from that cartoon show, and, yeah, it's probably no accident. Let's also get this out of the way -- this might be one of the most flat-out awesome science fiction covers ever. It's also notoriously tough to find, especially in nice shape, plus it's by Alex Schomburg, one of the best loved, most collected, and finest of Golden Age cover artists. And, it's gorgeously airbrushed, with astonishingly bright, vivid colors. Add that all up to one of the most requested comic covers of the Golden Age. On the rare occasion it comes to market, dealers and collectors alike literally salivate over it (we've seen it), no matter what condition it's in. The creme-de-la-cool, the centerpiece of any sci-fi GA comic collection, and probably the best non-superhero comic cover ever, this is a doozy. Did we mention we love this book? We love this book.

This is the highest-graded copy of this masterpiece, and, really, we should be putting highest-graded copy in all caps or something, but we try to stay classy, but, dude, this is the highest-graded copy of Startling Comics #49. If that doesn't get you excited, I don't know what to do for you. This is far-and-away the single coolest sci-fi cover of the Golden Age, and we fully expect near-fist-fights between bidders come closing time, so bring your A-game for this one.

Overstreet Guide 2017 NM- (9.2) value = $6,000.

Artist Information

Known for his dizzying, bustling war covers, bondage covers and airbrush Sci-Fi covers! Truly one of the most highly collected artists of the Golden Age. Alex Schomburg was born on May 10, 1905, in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, Schomburg freelanced primarily for Timely Comics, the 1940s forerunner of Marvel, displaying his talent for action tableaux in covers featuring Captain America, the Sub-Mariner, the Human Torch, and other superheroes. He also provided covers for Pines Publications, for titles including Exciting Comics and America's Best Comics, featuring such superheroes as the Black Terror and the Fighting Yank, as well as for Harvey Comics. Stan Lee said the following about Schomburg "I've always felt that Alex Schomburg was to comic books what Norman Rockwell was to The Saturday Evening Post. He was totally unique, with an amazing distinctive style. You could never mistake a Schomburg cover for any other artist's. ... I remember hearing Timely Comics publisher Martin Goodman tell me time and again how great a cover illustrator Alex was, and how he wished we had more like him. Despite the quantity of work we gave him, despite the care and effort that went into every Schomburg cover, I cannot remember Alex ever being late with any illustration."
