CONAN THE BARBARIAN Issue #1 Interior Page
Publisher:
Marvel
Grade:
F/VF: 7.0
When Barry Smith and Roy Thomas teamed up to create Conan the Barbarian for Marvel Comics, the undertaking was seen as somewhat of a risky proposition, as the muscular barbarian had no connection to the Marvel Universe of superheroes, existed in a completely different time period, and took part in adventures that had more adult themes. The gamble paid off in spades, not only did Conan the Barbarian become an instant cult success, but the character was then spun off into two black-and-white magazines, Savage Tales in 1971 and the Savage Sword of Conan in 1974. Conan remained a very successful character for the publisher and went on to appear in several reboots and spin off titles well into the 1990s. This page, from the very first issue of Conan the Barbarian, shows Conan befriending Olav, the leader of a group of Aesir, as the pair discusses their business arrangement and battle strategy, providing readers an introduction to the Cimmerian warrior and his straight-forward personality. Smith's take on Conan was that of a youthful adventurer, who was still developing into manhood, and who had human weaknesses, very much the opposite of John Buscema's indestructible musclebound death machine. The early issues of Conan the Barbarian are considered to be some of Smith's best, and his clean line work and strong sense of composition were the perfect fit for Marvel's foray into the world of Sword & Sorcery, which coincided perfectly with the 1970s passion for the genre; films, tv shows, books and even new role-playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons all helped drive the demand for the pulpy adventures of Robert E. Howard and his peers. When it comes to fans of Conan, and especially Barry Smith issues, you cannot ask for much more than a page from the very first issue of the revered, long-running series. This one is certainly impressive, as it introduces the wandering barbarian hero to a whole new audience, one which would fall immediately in love with this icon of pop culture.
