MARVEL MYSTERY #2
CGC VF/NM: 9.0
After the smash success of Marvel Comics #1, Martin Goodman forged ahead with a slightly retitled comic, adding the word "mystery" in hopes of attracting readers who fancied pulp detective stories. Bill Everett's lushly illustrated Sub-Mariner is here, held over from the first issue, along with Burroughs pastiche Ka-Zar, and notably, the Angel, somewhat forgotten now, but successful enough in his day to hold down a solo spot in this title for the length of its decade-plus run. The Angel's appearance proved popular enough to cast him as the cover star for the title in the early issues of Marvel Mystery Comics, making him, possibly, Marvel's first big box-office draw. While the frenzied, active styles of Kirby and Schomburg would soon dominate the publisher's output, these early issues keenly show the influence of the illustrative, deft line work from the Raymond school and to this day are treasured for their lovely art and finely-honed tales of derring-do.
This is the second-highest graded example of this important issue. The cover is just lovely, the yellow and red chromatic scheme remains bright and the interior pages are white. All in all, this is a wonderful Golden Age comic and one that is sure to be end with a bang come hammer time.
Overstreet Guide 2018 VF/NM (9.0) value = $64,500.
