Bob Kane/Jerry Robinson cover/art; 1st (and only) GA Scarecrow cover
The Scarecrow began as a startlingly original Batman villain created by Bill Finger, Bob Kane, and Jerry Robinson. Surprisingly, the macabre murderer only made two Golden Age appearances before being shelved for several years. Detective Comics #73 features the second of those beloved early turns, as well as the Scarecrow's only Golden Age cover appearance. Of course, the character was later successfully revived by DC in the Silver Age. From there, both the Scarecrow and his alter-ego of Dr. Jonathan Crane found big-screen fame in director Christopher Nolan's acclaimed Dark Knight trilogy of Batman films ā ensuring that early appearances by the creepy criminal remain top collectibles.
This book is in impressive condition, with a strong color palette, and an instantly memorable cover design. With more Batman films scheduled for the DCEU, it's likely that the Scarecrow will once again become a hot property, and copies of this classic issue will see another jump in value.
Overstreet Guide 2018 FN+ (6.5) value = $3,525.
Artists Information
Jack Kirby is called 'The King of Comics' for a reason, during his career that spanned six decades he gave us many of the most iconic characters the medium would ever see. From his introduction of Captain America at the height of World War II it was clear he wasn't your ordinary comics artist. But it was his creative explosion at Marvel Comics in the 1960's that cemented his legacy, over a short period of time Kirby would give us The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, The Hulk, The X-Men, Thor, Ant-Man and Nick Fury just to name a few. Kirby would then go to DC and create his Fourth World, introducing Darkseid, Mister Miracle, The New Gods and a host of cosmic supporting players. Long live The King!
