Rare! tied with Star Ranger #1 as 1st Western comic; Eisner art; COMIC BOOK IMPACT RATING OF 8 (CBI)Western Picture Stories #1 is notable for being the first of two comic books, both published simultaneously by Centaur, to feature a western motif on its cover. Western-themed pulps and dime novels were a hugely popular genre, portraying the outlaws and lawmen of the old west as modern day supermen captured the imaginations of city folk across the country, and likely, some of the very same characters portrayed in the tales enjoyed reading overblown accounts of their exploits as well. Centaur had the lucky foresight to publish the first comic books to employ the genre, and in doing so, launched a long-running and very successful western comic book industry. These early books would grow into the absolute cowboy comics boom of the 1950s, and this is where it all started.The colors on this book are top notch, verdant green scenery and blue skies dominate the background as our cowboy hero's outfit stands out in strong contrast to his mount's bright coat. Any color breaks or creases are located along the spine and corners, leaving the main focus of our gun-toting lawman virtually untouched.

Will Eisner is an American cartoonist, writer and entrepreneur who's one of the earliest cartoonist to contribute to the comics industry. Will is famous for his experiments in content and form in comics as well as popularizing the term "Graphic Novel". Will Eisner's most recognized works are The Spirit and A contract with God.
