origin & 1st app of Daredevil (Matt Murdock); 1st app of Karen Page, Foggy Nelson; Jack Kirby/Bill Everett cover; COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 10 (CBI)Marvel was booming as the House of Ideas back in 1964, with Stan Lee deciding to revive an old comic character name (last used by Golden Age creator Charles Biro) before adding the enticing gimmick of making their crime-fighting Daredevil the alter-ego of a blind lawyer—providing modern intrigue, a great hook, and a creation that would inspire generations of comic collectors.
This issue's dynamic Jack Kirby cover (and ravishing Bill Everett interiors) first established Daredevil as a unique and mature alternative to Marvel's cosmic adventuring and teenage angst. (This issue also boasts the first appearances of Karen Page and Foggy Nelson). The character would only become more popular with Frank Miller's legendary revamping of the book in the 1980s. That prestigious run would set up the character for a big-screen film and a hit Netflix show--now leading to more buzz over the upcoming Disney+ series "Daredevil: Born Again," based on a classic Miller storyline featuring Karen Page.
Daredevil is one of the great continued success stories of Marvel's stable as the character has undergone several transformations over the decades. From his earliest iteration as a yellow-and-black suited Silver Age crimefighter, to his hard-boiled and groundbreaking tenure in the 1980s that made illustrator Frank Miller into a household name. In the modern day, Daredevil has enjoyed yet another rebirth due to the staggering popularity of his recently canceled Netflix show, with rumors swirling about a rebooted TV series or an upgrade to the MCU, Daredevil is the hero that keeps on reinventing himself. From the highly collectible key first issue, featuring a Spider-Man cover appearance illustrated by Jack Kirby right up to the last pre-Miller issue, this is a fantastic collection of Man Without Fear comics for those Devil of Hell's Kitchen fans out there.

Jack Kirby is called 'The King of Comics' for a reason, during his career that spanned six decades he gave us many of the most iconic characters the medium would ever see. From his introduction of Captain America at the height of World War II it was clear he wasn't your ordinary comics artist. But it was his creative explosion at Marvel Comics in the 1960's that cemented his legacy, over a short period of time Kirby would give us The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, The Hulk, The X-Men, Thor, Ant-Man and Nick Fury just to name a few. Kirby would then go to DC and create his Fourth World, introducing Darkseid, Mister Miracle, The New Gods and a host of cosmic supporting players. Long live The King.
Bill Everett was an American comic book writer-artist best known for creating Namor the Sub-Mariner, as well as co-creating Daredevil with writer Stan Lee for Marvel Comics. Everett fell into comics almost by accident in the industry's earliest days, creating the character Amazing-Man for Centaur Publications in 1939. That same year saw Everett contributing the first Sub-Mariner story for Marvel Mystery Comics #1, the very first book from Timely Comics (which would eventually become Marvel Comics). Sub-Mariner would prove to be one of Timely's earliest hits, and Everett would continue drawing Namor's adventures until 1949. In the '50s, Everett would continue working for what was now Atlas Comics on numerous titles, occasionally reviving Sub-Mariner. With the explosion of the Marvel Age in the '60s, Everett joined Stan Lee in co-creating and drawing the first issue of Daredevil. He also found regular work contributing to Tales to Astonish and Strange Tales. The Sub-Mariner would return again in Tales to Astonish #85, continuing there (and then in his own title) with sporadic contributions from Everett. Bill Everett died suddenly at the age of 55 in 1973.
