origin of the Deacon & Sidekick Mickey, Black Widow app; new costume
Created by, among others, Dondi creator, and journeyman artist, Irwin Hasen, Catman was publisher Frank Z. Temerson's attempt to cash in on the sudden superhero boom, resulting in a colorful, bright costumed crimefighter whose origin combined elements of Tarzan, Batman, and Captain America in a unique and arresting mix that remains a cult favorite to this day. Possibly the only caped hero of the day paired with a young female sidekick (named Kitten, which, what did you expect), and the only hero team allowed to age somewhat realistically over the years, the team proved rather popular through the war years, which led to this solo book. Although only nominally the Catman's comic -- it was really a continuation of the cancelled Crash Comics with a new title and logo -- this is still a vital and rare first issue. The scarcity of the run in general, due to scattered distribution and WWII paper drives, makes this one of the toughest and most rewarding of hero titles to collect.

Dominated by a sunny yellow wash, the color strike on this copy of Catman #1 is a real stunner, the hues are newsstand fresh and the action-packed cover design seems to leap off the page. You would have to live nine lives to find another copy of this cult fave in such impressive shape, this book is one of the true sleeper hits of the Golden Age.
