rare! The Clock Begins (Clock cover) (11/36)
Lost Valley CopyPublished the same month as Funny Pages #6, this issue contains one of the two first appearances of the Clock, who is considered by many to be the bridge that connects the pulp magazines of the 20s and 30s to the newborn comic book industry. The first comic character to hide his identity with a mask, the Clock was a master of disguise and a hypnotist, who had the additional benefit of massive personal wealth that allowed him to build gadgetry and a hidden lair, obviously becoming an influence on Batman and many other superheroes inspired by the mysterious crime-fighter. The historical importance of this comic cannot be overlooked, as it is basically ground zero for cape books, a key Golden Age book, and a major chapter in the story of the industry.
Graded a respectable 7.5 this Lost Valley copy of the first issue of Funny Picture Stories has held on to much of its appeal over the years, the bright yellow color scheme remains fresh and shiny, while the crude, pulpy image of the Clock is clean and crisp. Rare Golden Age comics like this one usually turn up in low grade, so this opportunity to bid on an important piece of early comics history in VF- condition should not be overlooked lightly.
Overstreet Guide 2018 VF- (7.5) value = $2,758.
