Detective Comics #38 i— changing the course of comics with the first appearance of Robin, the Boy Wonder! Created in 1940 by Bob Kane, Bill Finger, and Jerry Robinson, Robin made his debut with a tragic backstory that made him the perfect companion for the similarly orphaned Bruce Wayne.

The idea of a kid sidekick was still a major gamble against the gritty backdrop of Gotham City. Fortunately, Robin was embraced by younger readers. The character soon doubled the sales of comics in the Batman franchise, inspiring a wave of young sidekicks from beloved stars (Bucky Barnes, Toro) to forgotten figures (Stampy, Owl-Girl).

Detective was ultimately proven right to hype Robin as the “sensational character find of 1940” on the cover. Of course, many teens would later take on Robin's trademark yellow cape, red suit, green boots, and gloves. Investors still know there's only one original Boy Wonder, and only one definitive debut as Robin bursts onto the cover and into legend!

Collectors looking for attractive copies, without breaking the bank, would do well to cast an appreciative eye over this copy, whose bright colors and striking cover image make it well worth pursuing. It presents much nicer than its certification and is one of the nicer G/VG copies you'll come across. Though his presence on the silver screen has been lacking of late, fans would be wise to invest now as the Cardinal-Crested Crusader's time is just over the horizon. We've noticed that copies of this key issue are getting harder and harder to come by.

Overstreet Guide 2016 G/VG (3.0) value = $12,000.

Artists Information

A celebrity comic artist of the Golden Age, co-created Batman and Robin with Bill Finger, as his brainchild became more in demand he hired an army of ghost artists to illustrate the dearth of Batman features on the market, but all were credited to Kane. His other achievements include the creation of Catwoman, Two-Face and cartoon character Courageous Cat. Kane was the object of some controversy for taking credit for the art and inspiration of others, but he was also undoubtedly an important figure in the history of comics. He published an updated version of his autobiography "Batman and Me: The Saga Continues" shortly before his death in 1998. He got his start at the Eisner/Iger studio and was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.

Sherrill David Robinson known as Jerry Robinson, was an American comic book artist known for his work on DC Comics' Batman line of comics during the 1940s. He is best known as the co-creator of Robin and the Joker and for his work on behalf of creators' rights. He was inducted into the Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2004.
