Light Tan to Off-White pages
scarce; bondage/horror graveyard cover (8/42)Welp, Bucky's tied up to something again. This time, though, Cap is facing off against...okay, what exactly are those things and why are they in a cemetery? I can't even. Seriously, though, this is among the nuttiest and coolest of Golden Age Cap covers, with perfectly grisly colors and nicely spotted blacks adding to the gruesome mood of the piece. One assumes that, after fighting off Nazis and Japanese soldiers all the time, Cap would be grateful for the change of pace, but Bucky must be thinking, "what? again?" It's impossible to understate the rarity and demand for Timely Caps, so we won't even try -- be assured this is a tough one to find in any grade. The rarity of Captain America Comics #17 is reflected in the fact that there are under 100 copies on the CGC census, of which only 66 are in unrestored condition, making this a very desirable book for Golden Age collectors. This FN+ copy is quite attractive, the colors retain a punch as powerful as Cap’s roundhouse on this cover. Al Avison’s design telegraphed the pre-code horror craze of the post-war era by several years, as well as this title’s eventual devolution into a horror book which would see Captain America acting as the host of macabre tales within his once glorious superhero milestone.
