D CopyDuring the second World War, comic publishers big and small were quick to capitalize on the patriotic mood of the day with images of Nazis being punched, Japanese soldiers getting skewered, and Axis leaders being bested by beefy heroes and precocious scamps. Better/Nedor publications battled for their newsstand space by trying to out-patriot the rest. Their wartime covers were often the most outlandish and aggressive of a crowded field. This is largely thanks to the efforts of Alex Schomburg, who left his intricate style behind at Timely to draft more expansive, cartoonish, and brash covers for the scrappy competitor.
