Tales of Terror Annual #1 launched one of the most important series from the Golden Age of Pre-Code Horror, starting in 1951 as a collection of some of EC Comics' most important and controversial titles. This outstanding volume features many of the most beloved creators in the history of horror itself, with the complete contents of comics that would go on to be impossibly rare. These compilations also have the rare appeal of being unique variants within the issue's run. EC simply gathered different back issues of their classic books to get bound around the Tales of Terror Annual covers. (The individual titles within this Annual are listed below.) There's still much love for Al Feldstein's unique contribution here, as his art brings together EC's beloved Crypt-Keeper, Old Witch, and Vault-Keeper on a classic infinity cover!

The EC Annual runs also preserved these classic books while they were just years away from extinction. EC Comics was taking a lot of heat over the content of comic books, which eventually led to Senate hearings and the establishment of the Comics Code Authority. That leaves this Tales of Terror Annual as a testament to the artistic and cultural impact of EC Comics during a transformative period in the history of the comic book industry. ECs are high-value targets for collectors due to the imprint’s scandalous reputation, extremely talented creators, and cult status. Even the more common EC books are hard to come by, but a Tales of Terror Annual is painfully rare.

This book is extremely scarce, there are only 31 copies listed on the CGC census, and this 5.0 example only has five copies above it. ECs are high-value targets for collectors due to the imprint’s scandalous reputation, extremely talented creators, and cult status. Even the more common EC books are hard to come by, but this Tales of Terror Annual is painfully rare, any true EC collector who hopes to own a complete run of the publisher’s output is chomping at the bit to bid on this newly unearthed jewel. Hailing from the Bobby Blue Collection, this mid-grade copy is in pretty admirable condition, with eye appeal for days, the colors are strong, and the book is stable. This issue has not traded hands before, as this is the first time it is going up at auction. A 5.0 copy of Tales of Terror Annual #1 sold for $36,000 in September, 2021.
