Captain America Comics #74 is exactly what it looks like — an issue featuring the Red Skull, but now packaged as a horror title called Captain America's Weird Tales . By the late 1940s, kids were buying horror comics and superheroes weren't selling. That inspired Timely to rebrand their entire line as "Weird" this and "Astonishing" that. Captain America Comics promptly became Captain America's Weird Tales for two bizarre issues. The first would feature Cap's final appearance of the '40s in this surreal tale of the Red Skull plotting from Hell to have Satan claim Captain America's soul.
The main story is backed by straight horror tales, and Cap wouldn't even rate an appearance in the next issue of the title. The book was then put on hiatus until Captain America #76 hit the stands in 1954. This comic's notoriously low print run (under 100 copies in the CGC Census) has made it a holy grail for both Cap fanatics and collectors who appreciate the book's very specific place in comic book history.
Captain America Comics #74 is a popular curio for fans of Golden Age books, Captain America collectors, and pre-code horror mavens, as this oddball book is the poster boy for the confusion publishers had to contend with once superhero comics went out of vogue after WWII. A nice mid-grade copy, this lot should be a popular draw at auction, as this comic is fairly rare, with just under 90 copies on the census. The colors on this cover still pop, and the majority of wear is relegated to the perimeter, avoiding the main characters in the center of the cover. A 5.0 copy of Captain America Comics #74 sold for #17,000 in March 2023.
