4th Superman; classic O'Mealia cover (9/38)In a way, it's a good thing that DC cautiously kept the Man of Steel off these early Action covers, as it allowed great illustrators like Leo O'Mealia one last hurrah, a chance to show off the chops that kept DC's pre-Kryptonian comics flying off of shelves. Firmly a part of the tradition of American illustration traceable through the pulp cover craze back to the early days of yellow journalism and penny dreadful covers, this stunning cover image stands in stark contrast to the bright, yet crude imagery quickly overtaking the newsstands. Dramatic, finely detailed, and richly observed, this evocative imagery was soon to be wiped off the stands by the caped copycats soon to follow in the wake of Superman's shocking and unprecedented success. This early appearance of the Man of Steel is insanely rare, and appearances of this scarce issue tend to send collectors into a bidding frenzy.
