Superman Co-Creator Jerry Siegel Signed Letter Seeking Employment

This signed postcard from Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel is a rare artifact from one of the comic industry's most controversial legacies. Siegel and original Superman artist Joe Shuster had managed a few lucrative settlements with National Publications (later DC) after the company acquired the rights to the character that the creative team had sold for $130 in 1938. By 1951, however, Siegel was engaged in a vicious letter-writing campaign targeting the top National executives that he blamed for leaving him "destitute."

This signed postcard (dated Dec. 12, 1951) provides further insight into the extent of Siegel's disillusionment with the comics industry. While in the midst of his battle with National, Siegel sent this card to pioneering Public Relations executive Aileen C. Fogarty. "I created and wrote Superman for ten years," Siegel writes, before announcing that he's looking to "switch to a new field" while offering his services as an "idea man" and more. There's no record, however, of Siegel ever working for Fogarty--who had chaired enough prestigious national campaigns to possibly be underwhelmed by Siegel addressing her as "Dear Sir."
