Superman Co-Creator Jerry Siegel Signed Threat Letter Over Daily Strip
threat letter in which Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel details his life of poverty while threatening National executives

This troubling signed letter from Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel is a rare artifact from one of the most vicious feuds in comics history -- as the writer continued his poison-pen campaign to shame the National (later DC) Publications brass who'd bought the rights to Superman for $130 in 1938!

Siegel wrote this embittered letter (dated Dec. 2, 1951) to James Lenahan, then the President of the McClure Newspaper Syndicate. Superman had made his debut in Action Comics #1 in April of '38. National then quickly worked out a deal for Siegel and Shuster to create a daily Superman comic strip by the end of the year. Siegel hadn't written the daily strip since being drafted into the Army in 1943. That didn't stop him from including the McClure Syndicate in his mailing campaign, starting by informing Lenahan that "Superman is a laughing stock!"

Siegel goes on to blast the National executives that he blamed for having left him "destitute." This letter also contains a unique threat from Siegel, though--as he proclaims: "I created Superman--and since National Comics Publications, Inc. and its officers have smashed me--I am going to smash Superman." Siegel would still return to write the daily strip toward the end of its run in 1966. Lenahan had left the company in 1952.
