Superman Co-Creator Jerry Siegel Sealed Hate Mail Letter Blasting National Comics Executives

This sealed envelope contains a letter from Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel which remains an untouched artifact from one of the most vicious feuds in comics history -- as the embittered writer continued his poison-pen campaign to shame the National Publications (later DC) brass who'd bought the rights to Superman for $130 in 1938!

The final months of 1931 saw Siegel sending out letters to National executives blasting them for leaving him "destitute" as Superman brought in millions of dollars. As seen here, however, Siegel also tried to shame his employers by reaching out to his own neighbors in Great Neck, N.Y. That includes this letter sent directly to Mrs. Robert Laiken.

These letters were usually individually signed by Siegel. They would include the addresses of the three National executives who Siegel blamed for his current situation, in hopes that his neighbors would contact them in support. In this case, however, one of Siegel's poison-pen letters has remained preserved -- with a handwritten note on the envelope saying "To Jack," suggesting that one of Siegel's concerned neighbors had passed along the unopened mail to Jack Liebowitz, a VP at National Comics who was one of Siegel's despised targets.
