Superman 1978 Movie Internal Development Memo w/ Lost Plots, Characters, Sex ScenesWarner Bros. launched the modern superhero movie era with 1978's Superman -- but this lost 13-page document exposes secrets about the movie-that-could-have-been! When producer Ilya Salkind purchased the film rights to Superman in 1974, he agreed to give DC approval of certain elements. He had also decided to proceed with shooting Superman and a sequel back-to-back, meaning this early internal document reveals forgotten plans for both films.
As acclaimed Godfather author Mario Puzo labored over a massive 500-page script, Salkind sent out the first official "Superman Synopsis"--preserved here as an original office mimeograph. The initial Superman origin is close to the beloved film. This detailed breakdown, however, reveals fascinating insight into many ideas that were later left behind. That includes four different evil schemes by Lex Luthor as possible plot points, and a very different vision for the ending of Superman's first sequel.
The synopsis also discusses possible sexual situations between Clark Kent and Lois Lane -- while assuring executives that "Superman will go to bed with Lois Lane but in such a way that PG rating will be given." And while this lost document brings up comparisons to James Garner and Burt Reynolds for the hero, the producers are most excited about their already-imagined casting of Joe Namath as an arrogant sportscaster who'd be Superman's romantic rival!
