Rare twice-up Fawcett Captain Marvel Jr. artwork!

Captain Marvel, Jr. #71 ALTERNATE cover art by Kurt Schaffenberger (March 1949) (Fawcett Publications) Long before Kurt Schaffenberger would immortalize DC Comics’ Superman, Superboy, and the Legion of Superheroes like his talented colleagues George Papp, Curt Swan, and Murphy Anderson, he would hit the ground running with stylishly detailed perfection on The Marvel Family characters for Fawcett Publications in the late 1940s. While this “IS” the only actual cover art illustrated for Captain Marvel, Jr. #71 since it originates from late editor, Wendell Crowley’s personal collection, the art itself differs very slightly from the published image being that Kurt Schaffenberger was a perfectionist and took personal control over the final product until he was fully satisfied. As scarce as Kurt Schaffenberger Silver-Age cover art is, his mainstream Golden-Age cover artwork is even rarer with less than a single handful of examples known to exist! (THE WENDELL CROWLEY COLLECTION). Pen and ink. Art is in excellent condition. The logo and text elements are recreations.

Artist Information

Kurt Schaffenberger's first job in comics came in June of 1941, when he was assigned to inking backgrounds for a 'Captain Marvel' story for Fawcett. After the war, Schaffenberger joined the studio of C.C. Beck and Pete Costanza, and his work expanded by becoming a featured artist on 'Ibis the Invincible', also by Fawcett. Schaffenberger was hired by DC Comics in 1957 to become the artist on 'Lois Lane'. From there, Schaffenberger became a regular contributor to the entire Superman comics line. He later became a frequent artist on the anthology series 'The Superman Family'. Schaffenberger also created artwork for DC's Shazam! series after C.C. Beck's departure. In 1968, Kurt Schaffenberger succeeded Jim Mooney as the artist on the 'Supergirl' feature.
