It's December 1939, and Superman is still a comics newcomer in this striking issue of Action Comics #19. Joe Shuster's impressive cover shows Superman ripping the turret off an enemy tank as the Man of Steel begins to make his transition from inspiring Great Depression hero to global good guy. Action will remain committed to Supes, as well, with this issue marking many years of the superhero serving as the title's regular cover star.
For added impact, this comic shows off the demand for more superheroes with an in-house National ad featuring the first published appearances of the Flash and Hawkman.
