This issue also features a full page ad for Batman #1 within its pages.Although this midgrade copy of Detective Comics #40 bears some signs of its 82-year vintage, it is an excessively rare collector’s item, as there are just over 100 copies of this book on the CGC census, of which only 63 are in original condition. The appearance of an oddly discolored Joker on this book’s cover and the premiere of Clayface within the pages makes this a popular key for Batman enthusiasts. Jerry Robinson’s cover illustration is a classic of the run, and with the inclusion of an ad for Batman #1, this book is chock full of special attractions which should make it a hot target at auction. A 5.0 copy of Detective Comics #40 sold for $16,800 in September 2022.
