Lee Elias pencils and inks; cover; 1953; image size 10" x 15"

Classic horror cover by the legendary Lee Elias from 1952! From The story "Bird of Prey!" We see a man at the ledge of a cliff as the giant claws of the gigantic bird come to kill the man! Created in ink over graphite on oversized 12.75" x 17" Bristol board composed of different sections (the masthead section, and then the original art section, with an added bit of board below that to make the full image size). This cover is all drawn artwork other than the word balloons, and there is beautiful artwork underneath the logo as well. The logo interestingly was taken directly from the cover art for Issue #10 (as evidenced by the issue number itself, and the whiteout covering where a man's hand crossed over the "LE" on the Witches Tales #10 cover art) There is some whiteout with additional art to blend the sections together, but just a great 1952 horror cover from the days when E.C. and HARVEY ruled the horror comic book market! There are several pasted up elements, everything is original art. Pen and ink. Art is in very good condition, there is some glue residue form the paste-ups.

Artist Information

Lee Elias was a British-American comics artist. He was best known for his work on the Black Cat comic book published by Harvey Comics in the 1940s. Lee Elias left comic books after the 1954 publication of Fredric Wertham's anti-comics book Seduction of the Innocent, which used four of his Black Cat panels as examples of "depraved" comic art. In 1972, Elias came back to American comic books, working mainly on DC's various horror titles and secondary Marvel Comics titles including Power Man and The Human Fly. His last major project was The Rook series for Warren Publishing.
