Press release: Superman comic strip discontinued by US Office of Censorship -April 14, 1945 reference to the atomic bombPress release from McClure Newspaper Syndicate to subscribers of the daily Superman newspaper strip re: the story entitled "Atom Smasher" which began on April 14 and continued until the Office of Censorship requested McClure to discontinue references to the atomic bomb!.
In the April 14 strip, he invites Superman to face a cyclotron, “popularly known as an atom-smasher,” which would subject him to “electrons at a speed of one hundred million miles per hour and charged with three millions volts.” The last strip to mention an atom smasher ran on April 23.
Less then four months later the afirst atomic bomb would be dropped.
Great historical significance!
