Suspense Comics #1 is considered by some experts to be the first horror comic ever crafted, appearing some four years before Avon Publishing's Eerie #1, and even longer before EC began its famous run of horror and crime titles. A lot of the credit goes to Charles Quinlan's legendary cover art, which racks up plenty of sordid imagery that would become the standard of controversial pre-Code comics. That includes a devil being worshipped by robe-clad Nazis with shaved heads getting ready to brand a beautiful blonde woman as a hero witnesses the unholy scene.

Most significantly, this issue features “Premonition" as the first comic book appearance of The Grey Mask, as scripted by Zac Gabel and penciled by Don Rico. There's a supernatural twist to this tale of wealthy Dr. Malcolm Muir, who secretly fights crime with the help of his peg-legged assistant, The Dove. Crime also pays in a weird tale of murder, with the Golden Age contents sporting great work by L.B. Cole, Don Rico, and more!
