classic Biro hanging/hatchet cover (5/44)Lev Gleason Publishing changed the title of Silver Streak Comics to Crime Does Not Pay, and stumbled onto a goldmine. Despite years of pulps and detective magazines, nobody had hit upon the idea to bring lurid tales of real-life murder and mayhem into the pages of the four-color funny books. Collectors prize issue #33 for its particularly horrific Charles Biro cover, which looks like an early inspiration for EC’s legendary horror output. The interior pages include work by Golden Age legends Rudy Palais and Dick Briefer.
Rare high-grade classic crime book with only 1 copy graded higher in CGC Census. This Crowley pedigree book has an amazing color palette, from the pastel blue behind the logo to the beautifully crisp blacks in the background. The shades are vibrant and intense, allowing the hotter colors to shine. The solid spine and sharp corners will attest to the amazing state of preservation this comic has remained in all these years. This title rarely comes up for auction in high grades, with a 9.0 copy selling for $9,000 in November 2021.
