Superman Creator Jerry Siegel Poison-Pen Letter to Comic Book Executives
troubling letter from Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel's hate-mail campaign against National (later DC) Comics executives
Jerry Siegel LettersThis signed letter from Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel is a troubling artifact from one of the most vicious feuds in comics history—with the Superman scripter in the midst of a poison-pen campaign to shame National (later DC) executives who'd paid him and artist Joe Shuster $130 for the rights to Superman in 1938.
The embittered letter—postmarked Dec. 12, 1951—was written to National executive Paul Sampliner at the offices of the Independent News Co., where Sampliner also oversaw National's distribution. The troubling missive would also be sent out to several of Sampliner's neighbors in a bid to shame him for leaving Siegel and his family "destitute," "living in a small, crowded apartment," and on "an involuntary hunger strike." (The letter also includes the home addresses of Sampliner, Jack Liebowitz, and Harry Donenfeld.)
