2nd Sandman grey-tone cover by Flessel (09/39)
This issue features the second cover appearance of Wesley Dodds, the Golden Age Sandman, just the first of many characters throughout comics history to use that moniker. Created by Gardner Fox and artist Bert Christman, who was sadly shot down in the Pacific in 1942, Dodds graces this Creig Flessel cover adorned in his trademark gas mask and fedora, using his sleeping gas gun on unsuspecting criminals. The story within features Dodds reuniting with some old Navy pilot buddies to solve a mystery concerning the mysterious deaths of several of their shipmates. In addition to the Sandman story, this issue also features work by Jerry Siegel, Wayne Boring, Sheldon Moldoff, Bill Finger, and Bob Kane.
