Alex Schomburg WWII Japanese air battle, bondage coverUSA Comics was a wartime anthology published by Timely, and like the majority of their output from the era, the book beat the patriotic drum for the boys overseas and the civilians on the homefront, quite possibly being the publisher’s most directly propagandistic of WWII titles. The addition of Captain America as the featured cover hero helped draw attention to the run which had lacked a sense of focus before the First Avenger’s involvement. Boasting such luminary contributors as Jack Kirby, Joe Simon, Syd Shores, and Basil Wolverton, USA #8 features a typically incredible cover illustration by the legendary Alex Schomburg. Cap jumps onto the wing of a Japanese airplane to rescue the perpetually bound Bucky while dogfights rage on in the background, another wartime classic scene by the master of the form.
