Schomburg WWII cover (7/42)
If you take a good look in the background of this cover you will notice that there is something different about this wartime book, that's the Empire State Building in the middle of all the carnage! Timely and Schomburg really took a radical step by bringing the war back home to New York City, which barely ever happened in comics of the period. The chilling image of Japanese fighter planes flying around the skies of Manhattan must have really drove home the gravity of the struggle occurring overseas, and the anxiety of Americans that the slaughter would spill over into the states. The dramatic cover art shows Schomburg's style maturing as well, the machines are more detailed and realistic, and the plotting of his designs are more classically laid out. A definite favorite of the series amongst collectors.
