DESCRIPTION
A 15% BUYER'S PREMIUM WILL BE ADDED TO THIS ITEM AT CONCLUSION OF THE AUCTION
crm/ow pages; very minor amount of glue on cover
classic Creig Flessel cover, Bob Kane art; 1st app of Sandman (07/39) Comic Book Impact rating of 8 (CBI)

The Sandman first appeared in 1939’s New York World's Fair Comics, but Adventure Comics #40 is the classic issue that breathed life into the character — as it contained the first story written for the snappily-suited hero sporting a cape, gas mask, and fedora.

Gardner Fox and Bert Christman are credited with creating the character under the pseudonym of "Larry Dean," with Golden Age artist Creig Flessel getting the story out just two months after Batman’s debut in Detective #27. The beloved story establishes Wesley Dodds as another crime-fighting millionaire with a butler and secret headquarters, but also provides the Sandman with strong ties to the moody pulp magazines that acted as the precursor of the comics industry.

This enduringly eerie Sandman cover image falls directly in line with the hard-nosed style DC employed in the Golden Age. Shown firing his gas gun, Sandman strikes a frightening figure that would soon be replaced by a more heroic take on Dodd's alter ego.

This beloved comic looks great at a colorful 5.0, with only 11 unrestored copies higher in the CGC Census.

Overstreet Guide 2023 VG/FN (5.0) value = $21,000.
