An unusual treat awaited readers within the pages of this issue, as the lively, kinetic inks of Steve Ditko met the ferocious, muscular figures and layouts of Jack "The King" Kirby. In addition, Lee and Kirby once again upped the ante on strange goings-on by introducing the Watcher, one of the most intriguing meta-creations of the Marvel Silver Age, whose influence over the series' galactic ambitions would only increase as time went on and would lead directly to the legendary Galactus/Surfer saga of later years. For some reason, this is one of the scarcer early FF issues, especially in nice condition.
There are only a handful of copies graded higher on the census than this clean and solid example of FF #13. The mysterious gray tones of this Kirby cover contrast nicely with the warmer hues of our heroes as they investigate the surface of the moon a full six years before Neil Armstrong and company. With an MCU Fantastic Four movie finally under production, look for every issue of Lee & Kirby’s run on the title to see an upswing in interest and value.
