Ross Andru pencils/Bill Everett inks; page 13; 1971; image size 10" x 15"
1st appearance of The Defenders

Great page from the debut of The Defenders, featuring team up of The Hulk, Dr. Strange and Namor, the Sub-Mariner. This page presents all three of our lovable leads, including the piercing eyes of Dr. Strange as he assumes the persona of a traveling businessman. Due to the demise of Dr. Strange's own title his story continued through Sub-Mariner #22 and Incredible Hulk #126 before landing in Marvel Feature with the introduction of a new team, The Defenders. The pairing of Andru and Everett provides an appropriate tone for this story, helping to set the stage for the darker side of Marvel's 1970's Bronze Age. Pen and ink. Art is in excellent condition.

Artists Information

Bill Everett was an American comic book writer-artist best known for creating Namor the Sub-Mariner, as well as co-creating Daredevil with writer Stan Lee for Marvel Comics. Everett fell into comics almost by accident in the industry's earliest days, creating the character Amazing-Man for Centaur Publications in 1939. That same year saw Everett contributing the first Sub-Mariner story for Marvel Mystery Comics #1, the very first book from Timely Comics (which would eventually become Marvel Comics). Sub-Mariner would prove to be one of Timely's earliest hits, and Everett would continue drawing Namor's adventures until 1949. In the '50s, Everett would continue working for what was now Atlas Comics on numerous titles, occasionally reviving Sub-Mariner. With the explosion of the Marvel Age in the '60s, Everett joined Stan Lee in co-creating and drawing the first issue of Daredevil. He also found regular work contributing to Tales to Astonish and Strange Tales. The Sub-Mariner would return again in Tales to Astonish #85, continuing there (and then in his own title) with sporadic contributions from Everett. Bill Everett died suddenly at the age of 55 in 1973.

Ross Andru was an American comics artist and editor. He is best known for his work on The Amazing Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and The Metal Men, and for having co-created The Punisher. During Andru's long career he also worked on Sgt. Rock, the Suicide Squad features in the Brave and the Bold, Rip Hunter, Time Master and Sea Devils at DC. At Marvel Andru contributed to Marvel Feature (where he drew the 1st appearance of The Defenders) and Marvel Team-Up among others.
