origin &1st app of Iron Fist (Danny Rand); 1st app of Harold Meachum; Gil Kane cover; COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 8 (CBI)
Iron Fist was a character created by Marvel to cash in on the martial arts craze that swept over the USA in the 1970s, thanks in no small part to Bruce Lee, although the publisher had already dabbled in the chop-socky market with Shang-Chi, the Master of Kung-Fu, it stands to reason the company wanted to hedge its bets by adding a Caucasian, and superpowered hero into the mix. In Marvel Premiere #15 not only is Daniel Rand introduced to readers for the first time, but he comes complete with a tragic origin story about the death of his parents and his tutelage at a mysterious and mystic hidden city named K’un-Lun, which is only accessible once a decade. The troubled youth grows into martial arts master with a fist as hard as some kind of metallic alloy and endures rites of passage before setting out on a heroic quest. Iron Fist would remain a popular character in Marvel’s rogue’s gallery into the Modern Age, teaming up with Luke Cage, and the Daughters of the Dragon, and later joining Netflix’s hugely successful Marvel TV franchise. Although the Iron Fist series met to mixed enthusiasm, the character has remained a bankable property and copies of his first appearance are desirable collectibles for Bronze Age fans.
