Internal 1939 Memo on Superman Daily Newspaper Strip Doubting His Being Faster Than a Speeding Bullet
rare lost document detailing National Comics' (and co-creators Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster's) struggle to maintain early Superman success
Jerry Siegel LettersThis rare internal document from 1939 is a fascinating look at how the newspaper industry dealt with the unprecedented success of Superman—with the pressure falling on young co-creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster!
This letter from McClure Newspaper Syndicate editor Hannah Baker (best known for her influential comics page at NYC's PM in the 1940s) was sent to Siegel, who signed to create a daily strip with artist Shuster shortly after the success of Superman's 1938 debut in Action Comics #1. In fact, the letter is dated April 12, 1939, mere days before the first anniversary of Superman first hitting the newsstands.
Baker, however, isn't showing much enthusiasm here, as she includes a copy of a letter from the Milwaukee Journal backing Baker's concerns about an "unrelieved emphasis on super-action" and that "SUPERMAN must be kept credible." The editor at the Journal even complains about Superman being faster than a speeding bullet.
In what would become a regular part of her correspondence, Baker also informs Siegel that the daily strips are again "off schedule." She strongly advises Siegel, "If you don't deliver the goods now in these newspaper strips, your way to the top will be obstructed for some time to come."
