Like many of comics' earliest artists, Basil Wolverton started out as a cartoonist, aiming for the funny pages of the daily papers, failing to find a home for his unique, surrealistic voice in the increasingly staid comic strip marketplace. His brief stint as a young vaudeville performer, and his eye for grotesquerie, resulted in a googly-eyed, manic, almost psychedelic style, decades ahead of its time. Luckily, the early comic book market was hungry for young talent that could produce stand-out material quickly and cheaply.
Lke many of the art form's pioneers, Wolverton got his break aping the comic strip fashions of the day for low-budget publishers, as in this incredibly rare entry from the tiny Globe Publishing company. The busy, harried cover belies the historical contents, as not only Wolverton, but future titans Will Eisner, Jack Cole, and Bob "Batman" Kane also get their early efforts published in this giant slab of early comics goodness. Serious Golden Age hounds know that historic documents like these are the "caviar" books of comic collecting, insanely rare and incredibly important.
