1st Crimson Avenger! classic Leo O'Mealia cvr! (10/38)
Ruben Blades Copy
Detective Comics #20 is another beloved Golden Age artifact of the comic's early run as a hard-boiled anthology featuring various tough guys. This particular issue, however, began to show the huge influence of Superman's debut in
Action Comics, with
Detective making room for the first appearance of costumed hero the Crimson Avenger.
The dashing crimefighter (aka newspaper publisher Lee Travis) was still human enough to fit right in with
Detective stars Speed Saunders, Lance Steele, and Bart Regan, Spy. By issue #22, the Crimson Avenger would also become the first costumed hero to appear on the cover of
Detective . Creators have kept the spirit of the Crimson Avenger alive over the years, with the Justice League of America even displaying his original cloak, mask, and fedora as mementos of "the first of our kind." (This comic is also beloved for the classic cover by Leo O'Mealia, the noted newspaper illustrator who briefly produced stunning comics work as part of Chesler Studios.)____________________________________________________
This 3.0
Detective Comics #20 presents exceptionally well for the grade, with Leo O'Mealia's classic cover sporting vivid colors after 86 years! This scarce title is typical of the Golden Age gems found in the
Ruben Blades Collection, with only 25 copies listed in the CGC Census — and is part of this collection's extraordinary run of
Detective Comics .
