Classic Fu-Manchu cover by Creig Flessel (8/38)
Ruben Blades Copy
Detective Comics #18 reflects the title's roots in pulp magazines, with Creig Flessel's classic cover capturing the menace of Fu Manchu — then on the second chapter of a 12-part serial being told in the book. This would also be Flessel's last work for
Detective. Fu Manchu was on his way out, as well, with the final chapter of his story making for his own final appearance as the book began to make room for Batman and fellow costumed heroes. This scarce book continues to be both a top collectible of the Golden Age and an artifact of the changing industry. That includes interior stories and art by future Golden Age stars such as Bob Kane, Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster, and Fred Guardineer.
This 7.0
Detective Comics #18 has been moderately restored to preserve a legendary cover of the Golden Age, while maintaining all the book's original look and feel. This scarce title is typical of the Golden Age gems found in the
Ruben Blades Collection, with only 32 copies listed in the CGC Census — and is part of this collection's extraordinary run of
Detective Comics .
