Dipping a toe into the horror genre, this cover for Wonderworld Comics #19 shows The Flame doing battle with a sinister hooded monk while two captives are bound and gagged and trapped inside coffins. Also, there’s a mummy in the background. This classic Golden Age book is a perfect example of how the newly formed comics industry continued to rely on the pulp tradition of outrageous imagery. The contents are classic, as well. The Flame is front and center as part of the new superhero fixations, but the vintage two-fisted tales center around magicians, cowboys, sailors, and lady reporters!_________________________________________________
