Ruben Blades Copy
Double Comics were a pretty good deal when a copy would occasionally appear on the newsstands between 1940 and 1944. Each issue's covers would be wrapped around two random comics left remaindered from recent editions. (This issue is one of the book's earliest runs.) Kids buying the books because of the cover, however, were often disappointed.
Double Comics had a tradition of wild covers that featured heroes who never appeared in any actual comics!
Any other buyers still made a smart investment.
Double Comics ended up preserving some of the rarest books of the Golden Age, thanks to the comics having a particularly sturdy spine. This issue's titles are specified below...__________________________
This 6.5 copy of a rare
Double Comics edition is a typically impressive book from the prestigious Jon Berk Collection, and now a double pedigree as part of the
Ruben Blades Collection. The two books making up the interior contents are equally rare. There are only 15 copies of
Daredevil Comics #4 in the CGC Census, and only three copies graded above 6.5; there are only 14 copies of
Weird Comics #17 in the CGC Census, and only one copy graded above 6.5. The book is also notable for that striking cover by magazine illustrator Malcolm Kildale, also known for his work on pulps and for
Classics Comics. Kildale left us wanting to see more of White Flash and Mad Mong!
