If you want to talk about comics, you must talk about Jack Kirby and Joe Simon, one of comics' most important and most influential partnerships. Born Jacob Kurtzberg in the dirt-poor lower East Side of Manhattan, Kirby quickly made his way out of the tenements with ferocious talent and driving ambition, partnering with Hymie "Joe" Simon, lower-class son of Jewish tailors, to create the kind of dynamic, unashamedly patriotic, high-octane comics that only immigrants' sons could create. This historic first publication of their work (following one unpublished story that eventually surfaced in the early part of this century) shows much of the fearless action and punchy dynamism that quickly made them the hottest talents in the business, and made them comics legends, both together and separately. This early attempt to ride the superhero wave launched by Action 1 and Marvel 1 boasts characters that may not be known to modern readers, but will be instantly be recognized by serious comics scholars.
