World’s Finest Comics #9 features a classic wartime cover from Jack Burnley, with Superman, Batman, and Robin throwing baseballs directly into the faces of the Axis leadership. That makes for a triple-crown of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Hideki Tojo for collectors of WWII-era comics featuring the infamous villains. (Toho gets the unfortunate honor of being on the receiving end of Superman's throwing arm.) These books remain top collectibles for Golden Age fans preserving the pop-culture impact of comics that buoyed the spirits of readers at home and serving overseas during WWII.

The interior stories, however, keep both Superman and Batman concerned with Stateside villains. That includes the Caped Crusader adventure "Crime of the Month," which is notorious for appearing to be a Joker story with the Joker abruptly written out as the villain. It wouldn't be until 1957 that the Joker finally appeared in his own "Crime of the Month Club!" story with Batman #110.
