Ruben Blades CopyThe ninth installation of World’s Finest Comics, an anthology series that stumbled upon the ingenious idea of teaming Batman, Superman and Robin on the cover, features a classic wartime design that lends a slightly darker edge to the title’s typically innocent and playful cover illustrations, aimed squarely at a younger readership. The trio of superheroes are shown flinging baseballs directly into the faces of the Axis leadership, Hitler, Mussolini, and Tojo are all comic foils, and, to be honest, you really would not want to be Tojo here, as Superman’s pitching arm assuredly packs a serious wallop. Continuing the tradition of embarrassing and violently assaulting the would-be rulers of the world on comic covers, it was books like this one that buoyed spirits and steeled resolve for US citizens at home and serving overseas during WWII.
