Handwritten Letter by William Shatner Revealing the Creation of the Vulcan Nerve Pinch on Star Trek SetThis handwritten letter by actor William Shatner (on his personal embossed stationary) has the legendary star looking back at one of Star Trek's (and pop culture's) most beloved creations. Shatner is also full of praise for "brilliant" co-star Leonard Nimoy as this letter recalls the Star Trek shoot where the Vulcan Nerve Pinch was first used.

We were in the midst of production on Star Trek. There was machinery around us as part of the scene. Somehow Spock and Kirk were fighting and I was using my boxing and Judo activities in dealing blows and subduing the enemies. At one point Leonard said "Spock wouldn't be fighting" and the director said "What do you suggest" and Leonard said "Well he'd do something like this" and he reached over and grabbed my shoulder and playing along I pretended to fall to the ground as immobile - I got up we all laughed and Leonard had invented the Spock pinch - It was brilliant - He knew his character, he understood the philosophy by which Spock lived and flawlessly used it to invent a moment of action that was tottally [sic] motivated by character - He did quite often. The spread finger greeting - I don't remember how live long and prosper was invented. I think it was a product of one of our writers but it was no doubt an inspiration given by the uniqueness of Leonard's portrayal.
